Shaun Wane makes surprise fullback decision as Wigan Warriors star’s position confirmed

Shaun Wane has made some big calls with regards to his team this week as his England side look to make it three wins from three in the group ahead of an expected quarter-final clash with Papua New Guinea at Wigan Warriors’ DW Stadium next week.

But first Greece stand in their way at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane and Wane made the decision to rest a number of star players including NRL stars Elliot Whitehead, Victor Radley and Herbie Farnworth.

Sam Tomkins and Michael McIlorum are also rested whilst Salford Red Devils centre Kallum Watkins misses out after a head knock.

The big question was who would replace Tomkins at fullback with St Helens star Jack Welsby expected to do so, but Wane has thrown a curve ball in naming Tommy Makinson at fullback.

Welsby subsequently replaces Farnworth at centre whilst Kai Pearce-Paul joins him in the centres as his position is confirmed.

He’s expected to play a portion of the game at second-row.

Wane has also rested his starting props Tom Burgess and Chirs Hill somewhat with both dropping to the bench as Matty Lees and Mike Cooper start.

Andy Ackers of Salford Red Devils starts at nine as his teammate Marc Sneyd starts alongside skipper George Williams in the halves.

Joe Batchelor debuts at second-row alongside John Bateman with Victor Radley, whose family is from Sheffield, at 13.

This means Morgan Knowles starts on the bench and is joined by Mike McMeeken.
