Shaun Wane departs England role ahead of World Cup after Ashes misery

Shaun Wane

England head coach Shaun Wane has stepped down with around 10 months to go until the start of the Rugby League World Cup.

The decision brings his six-year stay in charge of the national team to an end and comes after England’s underwhelming and frustrating performance in autumn’s Ashes series against Australia. Wane’s side lost all three games in the series with the head coach coming in for heavy criticism for his selections, tactics and inability to get the best out of the players he had at his disposal.

Wane took the role in February 2020 and took charge of 19 matches in total. Of those games, he won 14 with further losses coming against Samoa in the World Cup semi-final and the Combined Nations All Stars in his first game.

The RFL have confirmed that the hunt for his successor is underway and with the World Cup taking place at the end of the upcoming Super League season, time is of the essence when it comes to a appointment.

However, the governing body have confirmed that the role is expected to revert to a part-time position.

England kick off their World Cup campaign against Tonga on October 17.

Speaking after the decision, RFL CEO Abi Ekoku said: “The RFL would like to thank Shaun for his leadership and unstinting dedication to making the England Rugby League team the very best it could be over the last six years.

“Shaun has not only led England with pride, passion and a considerable level of insight; his diligence has set new standards and driven the expectations of a new generation of international stars.

“We wish Shaun the very best for the future and the RFL will undoubtedly call upon his vast knowledge and experience moving forward.”

No matter who is in charge, we are not going to win a “World Cup”, even if we get a head start.
Australia is so far in front, we haven’t a prayer. Stop bulling it all up needlessly!!!
