A number of Super League clubs still have quota spots available.

The Salford Red Devils have one open and following the shock retirement of Jake Mamo just four weeks into the new season Castleford Tigers have been left with a quota spot.

Warrington Wolves look set to have one soon with Thomas Mikaele set to leave the club due to home sickness in order to join the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL.

Meanwhile, Catalans Dragons started the season with two quota spots available which they were rumoured to want to use on a centre and a prop following the exits of Samisoni Langi, Dean Whare and Dylan Napa.

No wonder then they are the favourites to sign former NRL centre Patrick Herbert especially after their injury problems intensified at the weekend against Leeds Rhinos.

Though Sam Tomkins could be line for a return, Adam Keighran could have to move back into the halves after Tryone May’s nasty injury.

With Matthiue Laguerre out injured there is more pressure on the centre spots than ever so Herbert would be a welcome signing for the Dragons.

That said, though The Mole of Wide World of Sports has reported that they are the favourites to sign him, he has stated that he has held talks with “several” Super League clubs.

Could one be Castleford after Jake Mamo’s departure?

Here is what interim coach Andy Last had to say on any potential move:

“We’ve been looking but it’s not a great market at the moment. All teams are desperate to keep hold of the squads they’ve built over the course of the off-season,” he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“We’re taking calls and making sure that we’re striking if a player becomes available but at the minute everyone is looking after their own clubs, which they’re all entitled to do.
