Sensational stadium swap almost complete

Sale Sharks have almost completed a deal with Salford City Football Club and Salford City Council about buying the AJ Bell Stadium according to the Rugby Paper.

The Sharks have been ground-sharing ever since the AJ Bell Stadium opened back in 2012, signing a 25-year lease.

But, now Sale are determined to get their hands on the stadium as sole owners.

A “three-club discussion” was said to be ongoing last month according to Salford City Council, with an attempt to find a solution which is acceptable to all interested parties.

It means an uncertain future for the Red Devils, though they have been in negotiations with the Council and Salford City FC with an eye on moving to the latter’s Moor Lane.

The capacity for Moor Lane is only just over 5,000, but it could suit the Red Devils more considering its location and excellent transport links as opposed to the AJ Bell.

Fantastic news and not before time. Salford City Council’s spending priority should be helping the homeless and disabled and not shovelling money into a loss making ‘white elephant’ stadium.
