Sean Long explains signing of Leigh Leopards star despite having a number of fullbacks already

Featherstone Rovers have pulled off another major signing today with the announcement that former Leigh Leopards star Caleb Aekins joins the club on a two-year deal.

It is a bit of a surprise with the club having Mark Kheirallah, Brandon Pickersgill, Craig Hall and Chris Hankinson all of whom are capable of playing fullback.

However, speaking after the announcement, coach Sean Long has explained the move:

“Caleb is a well experienced player who has developed his game in a good system at Penrith.

“He has proven himself to be a player of quality in this competition and will add strength to an already accomplished squad.

“We are looking forward to him getting here to link up with the lads and meet the passionate fans.”

It will be interesting to see how the former Leeds Rhinos assistant coach and his former St Helens teammate Leon Pryce fit all these star players together in their team as the chase Super League promotion in 2023.

The club have also thanked the fans for their role in the signing: “Aekins’ signing has been in no small part to the continued support of Your Squad Builder members and our thanks goes in particular to those who have already signed up to Squad Builder Plus.”
