“Satisfied” – Wigan Warriors boss reacts to Hull KR win and reveals Willie Peters chat

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors proved their champion quality as they took their chances to beat Hull KR 28-12 and move to second in Super League.

For large parts of the game, Wigan weren’t on top but the Warriors backed their defence, didn’t panic, and remained patient whilst waiting for an opportunity. Of their five tries, three came from them capitalising on either mistakes or mismatches, whilst Willie Peters picked out another as poor defence on his side’s part as he labelled it the moment that changed the momentum of the game.

Hull KR saw their unbeaten record end whilst Wigan moved to second in the table with Warriors boss Matt Peet giving his verdict on Sky Sports.

“Yeah, I’m satisfied. I’m satisfied. It might not have gone our way tonight but it did,” he explained in his initial analysis.

Expanding, he said: “Hull KR had a little bit of bad luck and we managed to capitalise it but it’s a long season and there’s plenty of twists and turns so we’re trying not to get carried away, whether it’s going well or badly but I am very very proud.

“But I was proud at Leeds a few weeks ago when we got beat so we’ll just keep going.”

With Wigan under the defensive pump for much of the game, they didn’t get much territory and that was evident from the fact Hull KR had almost twice as many play the balls in Wigan’s 20 (17 compared to 9).

Asked to give his verdict on the best moment of the match, Peet bluntly responded: “Probably the end.”

He’d add: “There were moments in the game where we were second best, physically, particularly. They’re a very powerful team and we know the way they put the squads together, they’re going to start very physical and we feel like we can come home (strong). We back our youth and energy and skill.

“There’s moments in the game where we do the right thing and you see it start to turn. I’m really proud of Zach (Eckersley), he expressed himself. We kept being brave with the ball and that’s important to us.”

Eckersley scored Wigan’s first whilst also breaking in the second-half and almost scoring with his kick-and-chase seeming to spark somewhat of a momentum shift.

Peet was also seen speaking with opposition coach Willie Peters post-game and when asked about the extent of their conversation, he revealed: “I was asking him about Micky Mac first and foremost, he’s a friend of ours and we hope he’s alright and then we were just chatting about upcoming fixtures, a little bit about referees and stuff. We’ve got a lot of common headaches. They’re a great club and he’s a great coach.”

Peters would later confirm Hull KR’s initial assessment that Micky McIlorum had potentially torn his bicep.
