Sam Tomkins provides injury update ahead of Hull KR clash

Catalans Dragons star Sam Tomkins has provided an update and a timeline of when he will return after the hamstring injury he sustained against Huddersfield Giants.

The former England captain was speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Catalans’ clash against Hull KR on day two of Magic Weekend and revealed that he is expecting to play again this season.

Sam Tomkins confirmed: “Hopefully I’ll be back in three or four weeks. I got a scan in the week which we couldn’t quite measure the tear in the hamstring. I’ll get it re-scanned next week.

“Going off symptoms, the physios are pretty confident it’ll be three or four weeks.”

Tomkins sustained the injury in the club’s 19-18 win over Huddersfield Giants last week with the 35-year-old seen leaving the field with a heavily strapped hamstring.

At the time, Sky Sports commentator Stuart Pyke suggested that it could be the end of Tomkins’ career but that’s now thankfully been clarified.

It was also revealed that Sam Tomkins has never once torn a muscle in his long and illustrious career, despite being forced to retire at the end of last season due to a recurring knee injury.

He explained: “I’ve never pulled a muscle, never torn a muscle. It was strange because everybody was asking ‘Does it feel like a bad one’ but I have no reference to what a good or a bad muscle tear feels like.

“It’s making me realise that maybe I’m just too old,” he joked.

Tomkins also helped preview the clash against Hull KR, who Catalans have beaten on both occasions so far this season, with the Englishman giving his verdict on what it will take for Les Dracs to secure a place in the playoffs.

“I don’t think a couple of wins will be enough, no. I think it’s got to be more like four wins from the last six we’re going to have to win and they’re all winnable games, I think. Today’s the big one for us.

“All results have gone in the way that we like with St Helens losing and Salford losing so we’re hoping to stretch out and take the fourth spot and push away from that group.”

A win for Hull KR would see them go top whilst Catalans would move into fourth with a win.
