Sam Tomkins predicts where Warrington Wolves will finish this season

Warrington Wolves beat Leeds Rhinos 30-18 last night to jump into second place in Super League prompting talk of just how high they can finish this season with Sam Tomkins one of those to predict their fate.

They may well lose second place by the end of the day if St Helens are able to beat Wigan Warriors, however, that result might actually be more desirable for Warrington Wolves as it would keep Wigan within two points.

Matt Peet’s side have been the dominant force this season and even beat Sam Burgess’ Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup Final, a week after beating them 19-18 in Super League when Wire fielded plenty of youngsters.

Burgess’ side were far from vintage last night but managed to come away with the win thanks to tries from Matty Ashton, Rodrick Tai, Tom Whitehead and a brace from Man of Steel frontrunner Matt Dufty.

Former two-time Man of Steel winner Sam Tomkins has now revealed where he thinks Warrington Wolves will place in Super League this season as he spoke on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game.

Sam Tomkins won the League Leaders Shield during his time with Wigan Warriors but he also had plenty of second-place finishes and that’s where he’s predicted Warrington Wolves will finish the season, meaning they would secure an all-important home semi-final.

“I think Warrington will occupy that second spot and I think they deserve it given the quality they have produced this year,” said Tomkins on Sky Sports.

“They have had their little wobble, and everybody asked whether they were going to do anything this season, or are they not?

“But I think they have proved they have what it takes. Tonight (against Leeds) they weren’t great and they learn some lessons from that.

“They are going to learn some lessons after a win, and that, the win, is the most important thing.”

That mid-season wobble saw the club go on a run of three losses, two against Wigan and one against Salford Red Devils, however, they’ve won three from three since then.

What was impressive about Warrington’s win last night was that they managed it without a number of key players. It was confirmed midweek that centre Connor Wrench had suffered a season-ending injury.

Meanwhile fellow centre Toby King and forward Lachlan Fitzgibbon had also been sidelined following the Round 16 win over Huddersfield.

Coming through without those players was something that impressed Sky’s Jon Wilkin who added: “Look Warrington had Lachlan Fitzgibbon missing and they have got Toby King with a hamstring injury.

“So in three or four weeks, they are going to have two starting players coming back into the team.

“I can’t emphasise enough the importance of Lachlan Fitzgibbon. Look, I will say, Matty Nicholson deputising in his absence is an incredible young player.

“When Paul Vaughan and James Harrison get them on the front foot, Matt Dufty and George Williams look lethal for Warrington.”

Matt Dufty is now averaging over 200 metres per game and has taken more carries than any other player at almost 22 per game. He’s also picked up 13 tries and 15 assists, both top five stats whilst running almost 1,000 metres more than any other player.
