Sam Tomkins has been appointed to the role of Team Manager within the England set-up with the 35-year-old to be involved in the upcoming Test series against Samoa.
England take on Samoa in a two-test series with Tests to be held at The Brick Community Stadium in Wigan on October 27th and Headingley in Leeds on November 2nd.
Sam Tomkins will be involved in both games after landing his new role, something that Rugby League Live has reported, with the ex-England captain having been involved in the international against France earlier this year.
With Shaun Wane unable to attend the game in Toulouse, Sam Tomkins was appointed at the “personal request” of Wane, with his role on that occasion being part of the coaching team to “support (Andy) Last and the rest of the squad.”.
However, with reports of his new role, Sam Tomkins will be within the England set-up alongside Wane for both games against Samoa.
What is Sam Tomkins’ new role with England?
Sam Tomkins has been appointed as the Team Manager which is a largely logistical role that means the Catalans’ playmaker will oversee how the operation runs.
There’s also a more unofficial part of his hiring in that he will bring immense leadership and experience to the playing group, particularly for this Test series given that Tomkins’ last game for England was in the dramatic World Cup semi-final defeat at The Emirates back in 2022.
Moreover, Tomkins will be taken under Shaun Wane’s wing with the pair boasting a strong relationship from their times together at Wigan and on international duty, with Tomkins captaining the national side under Shaun Wane.
Sam Tomkins confirmed his retirement after that 27-26 defeat to Samoa, the last of his 29 caps for England, during which time he played in two World Cup semi-finals and scored a total of 18 tries.
For now though, the newly-appointed England Team Manager will be focusing on securing Catalans Dragons top six spot in Super League with the French side having stayed in England since Magic Weekend ahead of tonight’s clash against Leeds Rhinos.
