Sam Tomkins highly critical of this side’s set up in attack

Sam Tomkins was very critical of Castleford Tigers on Friday night.

It was the Tigers’ first game since they parted company with Lee Radford and saw interim coach Andy Last who is hoping for the job fulltime try his hand as beating one of the favourites to push St Helens for the Super League trophy in 2023: Huddersfield Giants.

So a tough start against a top team and they were soundly beaten by the Giants.

As Last tried to win his first game in charge and show his credentials, Tomkins told Sky Sports that he wasn’t impressed with how they set up/

“They’ve got to take it right back and build from the bottom. I felt like Gaz Widdop was running around and organising everything, you had people like George Lawler at the back of plays like a full-back. A prop playing nine but acting like a full-back, I thought Gaz had a dig but the defence was so poor that the attack didn’t have a chance.

“All good teams are built on defence, look at St Helens for the last four years. The best defence every year and the best team every year.”

Meanwhile, Jon Wilkin warned Castleford that they just need to avoid relegation because they won’t turn things around this year:

“Just don’t get relegated Cas! They can do whatever they want, they’re not going to turn it around this year.”

He then emphasised that they and Wakefield Trinity have a chance of being relegated:

“They’re a chance, it’s between them and Wakefield who goes down for me but Cas just need to not get relegated this year and then hope they can make something up next year and the year’s going forward.”
