Sam Tomkins confirms playing future amidst recent reports

Sam Tomkins has confirmed that he will continue his playing career after making the decision to return to play for Catalans Dragons in 2025, a year after he initially hung up the boots.

It had been suggested earlier by Catalans president Bernard Guasch that Sam Tomkins would play on with the Dragons’ owner revealing to French media that the former England captain would “probably” play on in 2025.

As reported by France Bleu Roussillon, Guasch had told French media: “He made this decision, he feels very good physically and will do the necessary preparation for two and a half months, his knee is fine.

“Of course, he will not play thirty matches next season but maybe 15 or 18 and certainly at the hinge as Steve McNamara planned, it will be an additional contribution.”

Now, that has been confirmed by Sam Tomkins who revealed the decision live on Sky Sports’ coverage of Hull KR versus Warrington Wolves, with that taste of the play-offs something that Tomkins is clearly striving for in 2025.

Catalans have also confirmed the one-year contract extension, sharing the news via their club website.

A statement read: “Sam Tomkins has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

“He has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will secure his future at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium until the end of the 2025 season.”

The former England captain had retired after last year’s Grand Final loss to Wigan Warriors but he came back in mid July with the club in need of an injection of experience, leadership and also magic.

Tomkins did bring that but he found himself injured again, pulling his hamstring for the first time in his career, but even upon his return the job was too much with Catalans missing sixth by points difference.

He will now go around for season number 18 and form a spine featuring the likes of Arthur Mourgue and incoming NRL recruit Luke Keary, the Irish international who has signed from Sydney Roosters for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
