Catalans Dragons man Sam Tomkins says his club is “too good” to be in the situation they’re in, with play-offs looking unlikely.
The Dragons made the Super League Grand Final last year, as well as in 2021.
They have also made the play-offs in every season this decade, never finishing below fourth-place in this time.
However, it now seems that they will miss out on the 2024 Super League play-offs, despite a relatively good start to the campaign.
With two games left of the regular season, they sit eighth, two points behind St Helens in sixth and Leeds Rhinos in seventh.
If St Helens beat Castleford Tigers this week, it will suddenly seem near-impossible for the Dragons to make the top six, despite their upcoming games being against Super League’s bottom two clubs – because their points difference is much lower than Saints’.
Sam Tomkins says Catalans Dragons are “too good a club” to miss out on play-offs
Speaking in the pre-game press conference for their game against London Broncos this week, the former Wigan Warriors star said: “You don’t play the sport to wait for other people to lose.
“We’re too good of a club to be in this situation. We’ve not played well enough.
“We have a good stadium, we have good supporters, we have good staff, we have good players.
“This year, as players, we haven’t been good enough. Simple. We shouldn’t be waiting for Leigh to lose, for Leeds to lose games. It’s simply not good enough.”
He continued to lament the performances of the players this year, saying: “I think there are seven teams better than us at the moment.
“I don’t think we’re in a false position. We’re where we deserve to be given the performances we’ve given this year.
“The club, the supporters, they deserve more. I think this week, playing in front of our home fans at (Stade Gilbert) Brutus, we have to show that we can play with some passion, desire, for 80 minutes.
“The fans aren’t going to be happy with this season. If we win by 100 points this week, it doesn’t make a difference to the season.
“The players are hurt. Nobody’s happy in this club with the situation. We all understand the situation. Nobody likes the situation we’re in.”
