Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess’ visa has been given clearance and he is on his way to Las Vegas to join his team.
He is now set to join his Warrington team in the States as soon as he arrives later today local time, just ahead of their training session with NRL side Penrith Panthers on Thursday.
Burgess travelled down to London in anticipation of his visa application being given the go-ahead and was waiting in the wings to board the first flight out once it was approved.
He already spent two days last week in the capital and visited the British Embassy to try to speed up the process.
His assistant coaches Martin Gleeson and Richard Marshall have taken charge of Warrington training in Burgess’ absence, with the pair potentially taking charge of the side should Burgess’ visa not been approved.
The rest of the Warrington contingent flew out on Sunday from Heathrow and it would be a shame for their head coach to not be able to join them.
The Wolves boss Sam Burgess was always optimistic about his visa being given the green light.
He told the media that it was the waiting on US Border Patrol that seemed to be the sticking point for his application.
Assistant coach Gleeson took today’s press conference and confirmed that Burgess was en route but their plans have gone ahead undisturbed.
Gleeson said: “There was a bit of uncertainty earlier in the week, but he is on his way now and he’ll get here late this evening.
“We don’t have training today, he will be here for planning tomorrow’s session when we link up with Penrith and the rest of the week will go as normal.
“It’s great news for Sam, the club and the event over here.”
So far this season, Warrington are two from two having beaten both Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield Giants so far in their 2025 Super League campaign.
Last weekend’s 18-12 victory over Catalans wasn’t their finest performance but they still looked strong enough to get the win.
In round 1 of the 2025 season, Warrington’s attack came under question despite a 20-12 victory, as they relied heavily on Matt Dufty’s individual efforts.
However, facing Wigan in Las Vegas will be a huge test for Burgess and his Warrington players.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet has said whilst they want a victory over the Wolves, he’s excited to go over and promote Super League together.
He spoke to the press last week and said: “I’ve said it a few times that we go to play against Warrington but we certainly go in partnership with them to show what British Super League is capable of.”
