Sam Burgess tipped to have “big future in coaching” and NRL boss explains why

Sam Burgess is set to have a big role at the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2023, the club where he enjoys legendary status other than the club where he debuted: the Bradford Bulls.

The England international takes on the assistant coach position alongside Head Coach and former Super League player Jason Demetriou at the Rabbitohs.

However, Demetriou is tipping Burgess to be a head coach before long.

“He has a big future in coaching, he may decide in two years time that he doesn’t want it but I think he will,” he said on St Helens legend James Graham’s podcast The Bye Round.

Demetriou went on to explain why it could be tough for Burgess to fulfil this potential he has as a coach:

“I learnt very early on in my coaching career that the player who I was at the end of my coaching career wasn’t who I was at the start and I need to be realistic in how I got to that point because if I’m expecting everyone to be at the end point, you’re going to be disappointed most days and that’s even more so for the high profile players regardless of whether it’s intentional or not.

“The enjoyment you get out of coaching is getting someone to achieve something he is not even certain he can achieve.”

So, the big question is, could we see Sam coach in Super League before long?
