Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess and his side aren’t having the best start to 2025.
The Wolves started the season off with two wins over Huddersfield Giants and Catalans Dragons but their previous two games have had pundits and fans alike questioning their performances.
Their 48-24 loss to Wigan Warriors in Las Vegas was flattering to them after scoring four tries in the last 15 minutes to close the gap.
They followed that up with a woeful performance on Sunday afternoon, going down 30-16 against Wakefield Trinity.
The glum-faced Warrington Wolves coach was open about how he thought his players performed and questioned their efforts across the field, from defence to concentration.
Speaking to the press after their loss, he said: “It’s a tough loss. It wasn’t a great game at all. I’m just seeing a side that’s a bit low on confidence.
“We got beat in every facet, which is not like us. Physically, they were a bit stronger than us.
“I think they got five short drop-outs back in the first half so we’re getting into good areas, but it’s then a concentration thing.
“We then get in front and then lose the kick-off, it was like under 10s stuff, and then we conceded a try that was like an under 10s try.
“That’s what I’m seeing and there’s a few things to have a look at.”
The Wolves were missing star full-back Matt Dufty but the Warrington Wolves coach didn’t want to make any excuses and insisted he has a squad with enough experience to perform better.
He said: “One player doesn’t make a side. I had 17 players on the field that I believed in.
“We’ve put our sides with more players missing than that in the past and we’ve done better. A few players have got to have a look at what they’re turning out for the side.”
Burgess will be hoping his side can get back to winning ways when they travel to Widnes Vikings in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup on Saturday.
In Super League, they then travel to St Helens before a trip to Leeds Rhinos for their March fixtures.
