Sam Burgess piles praise on Warrington Wolves star after stand out showing

Sam Burgess took the opportunity to pile praise on Danny Walker following his side’s 27-16 win over Wakefield Trinity on Saturday.

The Wolves were made to work for everything they got against Wakefield, but Walker claimed two assists in the first half, setting up Toafofoa Sipley and Albert Hopoate for tries, with the second being particularly impressive.

That came on the back of a quick play the ball, with Walker sweeping through the Trin defensive line before putting Hopoate away, showing just how the faster, quicker ruck rules play into his hands.

And, Walker continued to play a key role in the second half with his darts out of dummy half being key to helping Warrington up the field in tough moments.

The hooker had a tough year last season, as he struggled for form and fitness, but he’s started this season in electric form.

“Danny is a wonderful player, he has a mountain of skill and he understands the game very well,” Burgess told Sky Sports after the game.

“He loves watching the game and he’s always working on things and he’s working hard on influencing games and his composure and ability to play 80 minutes has been good for us.

“There’s part of his game he wants to work on but he’s a really, really big part of our team at the moment.”

On the encouraging performance from his side, Burgess added: “I thought tonight was a real high quality game and both teams were above 90 per cent.

“There was a lot of penalties and six agains and the last 20 minutes, it didn’t finish the way the game deserved. I thought Wakefield were very good, they were physical and we had to ride out a couple of moments in the game.

“There’s areas we can get better in, there’s no doubt about that but I thought we managed some patches well and got ourselves out of some areas really well. Another tough game but we’re happy with the two points.”

Warrington travel to York Knights in round four and they’ll fancy their chances of being able to build on their unbeaten start to the year. However, having seen Mark Applegarth’s side beat Hull KR and Hull FC this year already, they’ll be wary of being caught out by the newly promoted outfit.

“We’re looking forward to going to York for the first time,” Burgess added. “They’ve started the season extremely well and they’re playing with a lot of energy. I think we have a six day turnaround so we’ll rest up and get one day of training in and look forward to another great contest.”
