Sam Burgess admits Warrington Wolves are open to the possibility of signing players from Salford Red Devils in the build up to the new Super League season. The Wolves have made three additions to their squad for 2025 but it seems they are open to further signings as they monitor Salford’s situation closely.
Warrington aren’t the only ones keeping an eye on proceedings at the Salford Community Stadium with a raft of Super League clubs ready to make their moves for players. After being placed under special measures by the RFL, the club have now been directed to trim £800,000 from their outgoings.
Player sales are the quickest and easiest way of doing that and the club have confirmed that they are now open for business. As such, the expectation is that Paul Rowley will be forced to part with some his most high profile and best talents over the coming weeks to ensure the club can move forward sustainably.
The likes of Marc Sneyd, Deon Cross and Kallum Watkins are known to be of interest to those clubs with salary cap space remaining, while Jack Ormondroyd, Sam Stone and Joe Shorrocks have also been linked. With a fire sale expected, it seems every side in Super League is keeping an eye on the situation and that includes Warrington.
“It’s daft to think you’re not going to have a look,” Burgess said, per the Mirror.
“We’re not not in the market. It’s business. It’s the business of winning. Everyone else is doing it so…
“I don’t know [what’s happened] as I don’t work there. But it’s obviously not great for everyone involved.”
Warrington Wolves’ three new signings so far will get their first run outs in primrose and blue this evening as Burgess’ side take on Widnes Vikings at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Dan Russell will start in the back-row after his switch from NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons, while Oli Leyland, who has joined from London Broncos, and rugby sevens covert Alfie Johnson will also be involved.
