Sam Burgess opens up on brother George after move from Super League

George Burgess returned to the NRL ahead of the 2022 season with St George Illawarra Dragons.

That move came after horrific hip surgery which involved the top of his femur being shaved and metal inserted on to the top of his bone and pelvis.

After leaving Super League early for that surgery, George was ‘heartbroken’ according to his brother Sam.

“It’s an amazing achievement. George was heartbroken when he finished up in 2019, and he never thought he would get back to the NRL considering his injury and the surgery he went through,” Sam told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“It’s a testament to his character and mental resilience. He’s about to do something that nobody else has done. He has that look in his eyes where he’s happy and enjoying his football. That’s the most important thing.

“Whether he can get back to his best is a question for him. His best football was the 2014 grand final year – I’ve not seen anyone replicate what George did that year for a while.

“Comparing him to previous performances will be hard. The real question is, will he contribute, and in what capacity? Just talking to him, I feel he’s contributing as much as he can off the field at the Dragons, and he will give his best on the field. He should be really proud, and he’s not finished yet.”
