Sam Burgess makes huge Warrington Wolves admission and reveals full extent of Marc Sneyd injury

Sam Burgess has revealed Marc Sneyd suffered a fractured eye socket in Warrington Wolves’ win over St Helens on Thursday night. The Wolves beat St Helens 32-18 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium with Matty Ashton scoring a hat-trick on the night, while Toby King, Rodrick Tai and Matt Dufty also touched down in what was a comfortable victory.

It came at a price, though, with Marc Sneyd leaving the field with a head knock just before the break. The word was that Sneyd had failed a HIA, just as Ashton did later in the game, but Burgess has revealed that the scrum-half has fractured his eye socket.

Given George Williams is also out injured at present with an ankle injury, Warrington are now coming terms with being without their both of their star half-backs for a lengthy period.

Despite the setbacks, the Wolves came through to claim the result against St Helens, and Burgess admits the performance was the most pleasing he has seen from his side.

Warrington Wolves’ Sam Burgess makes ‘proudest day’ claim

“We had so much going against us really and a lot of adversity to overcome,” Burgess told Sky Sports after the game. “At half-time I didn’t think I had any players left, Sneydy’s fractured his eye socket, Fitzy was struggling and Kingy was on one leg out there.

“I’m lost for words because they were so resilient tonight they made some real hard choices. I reckon my proudest day as a coach so far with this group.

“I don’t have to say too much as it there for everyone to see. We’re going to be sore and down on troops but we kept going. We were playing in respect of Danny Walker’s nan, he lost her last week and she was a big matriarch of their family and there was a different spirit amongst the group. It was a real powerful performance.

He continued: “It was different at half-time because there was a lot happening so we sat down as a group and spoke about what we needed to do and how we were going to play. We had four or five different positional changes. It was more of a sit down conversation, our leadership guys stood up. Ben Currie’s leadership was outstanding, he was really enjoying himself out there.

“It was good to see Ewan Irwin, he’s a good young player and I didn’t expect him to play tonight. He didn’t have too much time to think about it which is not a bad thing.”
