Sam Burgess conceded that Warrington Wolves were beaten by the better side on Friday night. The Wolves had been flying in form prior to hosting Hull KR at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but they simply couldn’t handle the Robins, who ran out 22-4 victors.
It was a result that saw KR leapfrog the Wolves to take top spot in Super League with seven games remaining, as tries from Sauaso Sue, Tyrone May, Mikey Lewis and Peta Hiku gave the Robins the win they deserved. Warrington did get on the board through Matty Ashton, but they couldn’t get going enough to bring themselves back into the contest as KR showcased their defensive grit and determination, too.
Burgess was magnanimous in defeat but was quick to say his side must ‘fix up’ a number of shortcomings before entering into the play-offs.
“Hull KR played better than us in all aspects of the game,” Burgess told Sky Sports. “Physically they got us, energy first half they were all over us and we didn’t find a way to come out of it.
“The team have been giving so much effort over the last few weeks. We’re disappointed with the result and we’ll move forward as a team.
“For us we have to look at what we can fix from tonight. We have to look at what’s going to make us better and what areas we can improve on.
“I just think Hull KR were too good. They were brilliant. Defensively we struggled to break them down and sometimes you have to give the other team credit. It’s probably as good as I’ve seen Hull KR play. They were desperate and we just weren’t as desperate as them.
“It’s one of those nights, physically they were great both sides of the ball. They scored a couple of kick tries and one through the middle which is not like us. We’ll have to fix those up.”
