Sam Burgess’ honest assessment of Warrington Wolves performance after Hull FC loss

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess said his side simply wasn’t at the races following their 28-16 loss to Hull FC.

Whilst Hull FC were superb in the first half, the Wolves put in a much better display in the second half but it was too much to do to claw back a win.

Burgess admitted that his side were meant to be on the losing side following that performance but insisted they’re not too far away from a complete performance.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he said: “We weren’t the best side today so we probably didn’t deserve to win, we got what we deserved.

“We weren’t ourselves in the first half and we tried very hard in the second half but it was too little, too late really.”

The Warrington Wolves boss was visibly disappointed by the result but did praise his side’s ability to fight back during the second half.

The Wolves managed to score three unanswered second-half tries but they left it too late to make a real impact on Hull FC’s lead.

A 26-4 lead at half-time was enough to give the Black and Whites a win on the road once again.

He added: “We’re disappointed with the performance certainly, we never come out to do that, it’s not a part of who we are, it was just a poor first half.

“They had some spirit in the second half, they tried very hard but potentially left themselves too much to do.”

When asked about what changes his team needs to make ahead of their trip to Leigh Leopards next Saturday afternoon, he said he’s not too worried about this one game and it isn’t a pattern of bad results.

He finished: “We’ve just got to tighten a few things up. If it’s something that happens all the time, then I’ve got to worry about it but we’ll be honest and we’ll review it.”
