Sam Burgess was delighted to see his Warrington Wolves side return to winning ways but insists improvements are needed as they head into the play-offs. Warrington saw their hopes of winning the League Leaders’ Shield all but ended last week at the hands of Leigh Leopards but they bounced back with a strong performance against St Helens on home soil.
The Wolves actually fell behind in the contest as Jon Bennison kicked a penalty early in the game, but it wasn’t too long before they hit the front as Matty Ashton touched down for the first try of the game.
Jordy Crowther grabbed a second for the home side, capitalising on a fine piece of play from George Williams, who opened up the gap for the forward to score. Josh Thewlis kept the scoreboard ticking over against the Saints in the second half as the visitors simply fell apart.
The result means Warrington are just two points behind second placed Hull KR now and with a couple games to go they might just fancy their chances of heading into the play-offs after finishing inside the top two. However, Burgess believes that his side will have to tighten things up when the knockout action comes around if they are to progress.
“It was a good win, I was happy with our defence,” the Warrington Wolves chief told Sky Sports. “We have to tidy up a few bits on the ball and I think if we’re going to get to where we want.
“I was really pleased with the defensive effort. I thought Saints were great, they were physical, it was a tough game as we expected.
“We have to complete our last plays and we looked a bit scrappy on the ball, a bit clunky at times, that’s probably down to Saints line speed. Bits to work on but overall, really happy with the two points.
“It’s two points. I thought Ben Currie was outstanding through the middle. We had Cai in there, we missed Dufty and his connection with George (Williams), but he did a great job for us, Cai, we value what he brings.”
