Sam Burgess’ bizarre new job revealed

Sam Burgess is perhaps one of the most renowned rugby league players to have ever set foot on the pitch.

A young, Bradford man travelled halfway across the world to win the NRL Grand Final alongside his three brothers in what can only be described as one of the greatest moments to have ever been witnessed in the sport.

Now, though, instead of taking to the field in South Sydney’s crunch play-off clash with Manly at the weekend, Burgess will be in Thailand working behind the scenes on Russell Crowe’s film Poker Face.

The 32-year-old accepts that physically he cannot be there due to the shoulder injury that caused his retirement, but mentally he still wants to play.

“The hardest thing for me was walking away not on my terms,” Burgess said.

“Someone else told me to retire and my body told me to retire, which is hard to prepare for.

“If I had known in 18 months I had to retire I could have planned for that. But it just came so quick.”

“My head is there,” he said. “I am still connected to them emotionally in my mind because I know I would still be there leading that team if my body and my shoulder didn’t stop me.

“But I have gone past that now. It doesn’t break my heart to watch. I am really proud. Don’t get me wrong, I miss it. But that’s life.”
