Sam Burgess answers question on his Warrington Wolves future after Salford Red Devils defeat

Sam Burgess has addressed his future at Warrington Wolves following the club’s disappointing defeat to Salford Red Devils on Friday night.

The Wolves lost 25-12 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium against Salford, who had won just two league games all season prior to their trip across the North West. The Red Devils have been blighted by well-documented issues all season long but they were fully deserving of the result which only serves to dial up the pressure on Burgess.

The head coach was already under scrutiny following the loss to Huddersfield Giants last week and as the season draws to a close, Warrington will finish up someway behind the Super League play-off pace.

It’s fair to say that this season has been disastrous for the Wolves then and following the embarrassment of Friday’s loss against Salford, some supporters have made their feelings clear that a change needs to be made.

So, what next for Sam Burgess at Warrington?

“I’m on contract for next year and that’s the contract at the moment,” Burgess said in his post-match interview, per Sky Sports. “I’ll do my job and that’ll be it.

Pushed on whether he was keen to leave given he did interview for the job at Perth Bears, Burgess added: “I know where you’re going and I know what you’re trying to do, it’s a fair question.

“I did interview, we all know that, it’s public. I’m not keen to leave, I was actually talking about staying longer, that will shock everyone as well.

“Everything is just quiet for now. I’m here, I’m happy, I’m committed to what we’re doing and I believe in this club, I believe in the structure of the place, I believe in our juniors and who we have here.

“No doubt I’ve got some hard work to do over the off-season, no doubt about that. But in the meantime I’ve got to get some players ready to play next week against Leigh, who looked extremely good last night so if we don’t find a bit of spirit somewhere it’s going to be even harder next week.”

The loss was Warrington’s 14th of the Super League season and in the months that have followed the club’s defeat in the Challenge Cup final to Hull KR, they’ve won just four of their 11 games.

None of those defeats were quite as alarming as the defeat to Salford, though.

“It was a tough night, a really tough night. It’s not the first time it’s happened so I’m really disappointing,” Burgess added.

On his side’s post Wembley form, he said: “If I could nail that answer I wouldn’t be sat here like this. It’s been tough since then. You can see the players are in a tough place and it’s just not working for us at the moment so we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“We had plenty to play for tonight, there was three boys on debut and Leon back in the side after 16 or 17 months. but we’ve lot a bit of our spirit. I was as confused as everyone else.”
