Salford sign Championship winger

Great change is sweeping through Salford at the moment.

The club are changing coach over the off-season following the departure of Richard Marshall and could even be set to move to a new stadium as Sale Sharks and Salford FC take over the AJ Bell.

Those changes are creeping onto the field as well as Salford reshape their squad and build for what they hope will be a successful 2022 campaign. Today, they’ve continued that process with the signing of Deon Cross from Widnes.

He joined Widnes ahead of 2020 averaging a try per game at the start of his Vikings career before the pandemic put a stop to the Championship season. From there, he kicked on in 2021 and the 25-year-old won the Fans’ Player of the Year Award last term as well as the Try of the Year Award.

Salford fans will be hoping he can do something similar next year after signing a one-year deal with the club with the option of another after that.

Speaking to the club website about the move, Cross spoke excitedly about the prospect of playing for Salford: “I’m really excited about the move, Super League has been the target since I started playing rugby.

“Salford is a fantastic club who have reached new heights more than once over the last few seasons, and I hope I can help this club achieve again.”

Meanwhile Director of Rugby Ian Blease voiced his belief that the established talent at Salford could help Cross’ development as he hopes to become a Super League star: “It’s no wonder why Deon was voted the fans’ Player of the Year this season at Widnes. He’s a very talented winger who is still only young, so has plenty of time to develop his game even further.

“Being around the likes of Ken Sio, Joe Burgess and Rhys Williams, who are all established Super League players, can only help Deon mature and improve.”
