Salford RLFC boost as Championship half-back joins on long-term deal

Salford

Salford RLFC have secured the signing of Toby Hughes from Widnes Vikings on a permanent basis.

Hughes has featured for Salford on loan this season, but he has now made the switch to the Salford Community Stadium on a permanent basis, penning a three-year deal with the club. It’s a big move for Salford, who have had a difficult start to life in the Championship.

Mike Grady’s side have won one of their opening five games, with a 29-18 victory coming over Hunslet last month. However, the phoenix outfit have been on the wrong end of some one-sided scorelines over the last couple of weeks and they’ll be hoping the permanent addition of Hughes can go some way towards stopping the rot, while also freeing up a loan spot.

The 22-year-old only joined Widnes in the off-season after three years in the first team at North Wales Crusaders. However, he leaves the Vikings having never made an appearance for the club.

“We identified Toby in pre-season as a talent who could develop with us, and whilst we still believe in that, we’ve got to consider what’s best for the player,” Widnes head coach Allan Coleman said.

“Toby had been offered a deal with Salford for the next two and a half years, which was something we couldn’t match. Obviously, he’s been on loan there this season and has already bedded in with the group, which I understand.

“It’s a shame to lose him because he’s a great person, but I can’t stand in the way of young players playing rugby, so I wish him all the very best.”

On leaving the Vikings, Hughes said: “I want to say thanks to Allan and the board for everything they’ve done for me at Widnes over the past few months.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here, but this move was the best one for me to play regularly. I just want to wish the best of luck to all the lads for the rest of the season.”
