Salford Red Devils have been officially wound up following this morning’s HMRC hearing in London.
The Red Devils had seen a winding up petition regarding unpaid debts adjourned on numerous occasions over the last couple of months. Such decisions were made in order to give the owners the time they required to get the necessary funds in place to keep the club afloat and settle what is owed.
And, the owners, Sire Kailahi and Curtiz Brown, have released numerous statements outlining their plans for the club, with the last major one even seeing the pair outline their intentions to take the relegated club back to Super League.
However, it seems as though they have run out of time, with HMRC making the decision to liquidate the Salford club.
The order means all players and staff remaining at the club have had their contracts terminated, with the club unable to continue as a business in its current guise and with the business under the name of Salford City Reds (2013) at Companies House ceasing to exist.
That brings an end to 152 years of Salford Rugby League but it also brings an end to what has been a miserable period for the sport.
Brown and Kailahi took charge of the Red Devils at the start of the 2025 Super League season, taking on a club that was struggling financially having asked for an advance on their central funding over the off-season.
However, the financial issues continued with pay day regularly coming late for players and staff. Ultimately, players started to leave the club with Marc Sneyd being the first to part ways with the Red Devils with most of the first-team squad departing over the course of the 2025 campaign.
Paul Rowley stuck with the Red Devils until the end of the season but he made the decision to leave at the end of the season to join St Helens.
And, with just over six weeks to go until the start of the new Championship season, following the club’s demotion from Super League, the Red Devils lacked an entire squad, with Jack Walker, as he revealed to Serious About Rugby League, being the only player committed to the 2026 season.
What comes next is hard to know at this stage, but supporter group The 1873 has already released plans for a phoenix club to take the Red Devils’ spot in the 2026 Championship.
