Salford Red Devils defeated St Helens 40-12 in somewhat of a statement win and one of those on the scoresheet has given his verdict.
All eyes have been on the Red Devils this pre-season given their well-documented financial issues and that has only ramped up as of late with the RFL ordering Salford to cut costs by £800,000.
Whilst that has been hanging over the head of the club, it’s seemingly not affected the players who put in a strong performance against St Helens as they ran in seven tries.
Young playmaker Kai Morgan scored two of those and the ex-Leeds man has spoken after the match to give his assessment.
“I thought we looked good, everyone looked sharp,” Morgan said on the Salford Red Devils YouTube channel.
“Even though it’s a pre-season friendly, it’s always tough to come here and win. Round One will be tough but I thought we looked sharp.”
The Red Devils will next play in the Challenge Cup before returning to the Totally Wicked Stadium to face St Helens again in Round One of the Super League season.

Morgan played a different role in Saturday’s win as the half-back operated out of the number nine role instead. He’s argued that playing that role as a player of a smaller frame showcased the efforts of his teammates to dig in for him, something he praised when referencing the adversity the club have had in their off-season.
“It was a bit different for me playing in the middle. I’m not the biggest of bodies so I didn’t really enjoy the defensive side of it but the attacking side is great.
“It’s nice having Sneydy there and Atkin always talking to me and helping me as I’m not used to that position. Being in the middle then it showed everybody that we’re working for each other and I think that’s a credit to the group we have.
“We’ve gone through a bit of adversity but we’ve all kept it to ourselves and worked hard behind the scenes.”
Going forward, Morgan has confirmed that he’s unsure of which role he will play but he’s happy to be learning from two of the best in the competition.
He explained: “I’ve got the best half-back in the game to work under so it’s nice having him around. Even if I end up at nine then I’ve got Joe Mellor who killed it last year.
“We’ve got a bit more to work on, we weren’t squeaky squeaky clean but we looked good and I can’t wait for the next few weeks.”
