Salford Red Devils team news as club name just 18 players and saga continues

Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants have named their teams for Thursday night’s Super League clash with the Red Devils once again naming just 18 players.

The restricted Red Devils saw star man Marc Sneyd leave the club last week as the uncertainty at Salford continues to rumble on with centre Nene Macdonald the latest man to be rumoured for the exit door.

Super League’s only winless sides face off on Thursday night in a game that has been described by Huddersfield Giants coach Luke Robinson as ‘do or die’.

Both teams are desperate for a morale boost and to give their fans something to cheer about given their poor starts to the season and the squads for Thursday’s game have now been confirmed.

In an improvement from last week,  Salford have named a 18-man squad as their limited salary cap continues to squeeze them and once again Nene Macdonald is not named.

The centre was initially named in the club’s 17-man squad last week for the Challenge Cup before dropping out amidst reports and rumours that he could be the next man to make way, with Marc Sneyd having already left.

As such the changes to this week’s actual 18-man squad are that Chris Hankinson, who picked up a knock against Bradford, and Charlie McCurrie drop out with Joe Shorrocks returns from suspension with Matty Foster also returning. Nathan Connell has also been named, per the Super League Match Centre.

Salford Red Devils 17-man squad: 1 Ryan Brierley, 2 Ethan Ryan, 5 Deon Cross, 6 Jayden Nikorima, 10 Chris Hill, 12 Kallum Watkins, 13 Joe Shorrocks, 14 Chris Atkin, 15 Shane Wright, 17 Esan Marsters, 18 Jack Ormondroyd, 19 Justin Sangare, 20 Joe Bullock, 22 Matty Foster, 24 Harvey Wilson, 27 Kai Morgan, 28, Nathan Connell 30 Tiaki Chan

Huddersfield Giants team news

So far, Huddersfield have an impressive but unwanted record of leading at half time in every Super League game but also going on to lose. It was a feat they actually repeated this weekend in the Challenge Cup as well when they fell to Wakefield Trinity.

Robinson has described it as a ‘mentality’ issue and hopefully that mentality will be boosted by new loanee Niall Evalds who has been named in the 21-man squad for Thursday night.

The likes of Jacob Gagai, Tom Burgess, Adam Clune and Zac Woolford all remain out whilst Elliot Wallis is the man to drop out and make way for Evalds.

Huddersfield Giants 21-man squad: 2 Adam Swift, 3 Jake Bibby, 4 Liam Sutcliffe, 5 Sam Halsall, 6 Tui Lolohea, 8 Oliver Wilson, 11 Jack Murchie, 12 Sam Hewitt, 13 Harry Rushton, 14 Ashton Golding, 15 Matty English, 18 Fenton Rogers, 19 Thomas Deakin, 21 Leroy Cudjoe, 23 Taane Milne, 24 Aidan McGowan, 25 Jack Billington, 28 Connor Carr, 29 George Flanagan, 30 Jack Bibby, Niall Evalds
