Salford Red Devils star Tim Lafai almost made stunning move Rohan Smith reveals

Salford Red Devils star Tim Lafai has lit up Super League in 2022.

After joining on a one-year deal ahead of the 2022 season, the Samoan centre has gone from strength to strength in a devastating Salford attack that has earned numerous plaudits throughout the year.

Forming a potent attack with the likes of Brodie Croft and Ryan Brierley, Lafai has easily become the in-form centre in the league.

And, current Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith has revealed that Lafai almost joined the Gold Coast Titans when he was on the coaching staff back in 2015.

First, Smith had a brief spell as head coach of Tonga during this period before moving to Sydney Roosters between 2010 and 2012.

In 2013, he moved to Penrith Panthers before a return to the New Zealand Warriors in 2014 and then in 2015 he moved to Gold Coast Titans as an assistant coach which is where he almost became united with Lafai.

“Tim Lafai almost came to the (Gold Coast) Titans when I was coaching there. I’ve coached against him a little bit, but he’s very athletic and a lot of footy comes off the back of his carries,” Smith said.

“Their biggest strength is the team and the belief in each other. They bring out the best in the individual and they work hard and scramble hard.

“They are a grade example of what a team is.”

The fixture against Salford will be one of the major games of the season as the hunt for a play-off spot continues.

Whilst Leeds sit one point behind the Red Devils, it’s all to play for as just three points separate Castleford Tigers in fifth and Leeds in ninth with just five games to go in the regular season.

Paul Rowley’s side have earned considerable raps in 2022, but it will remain to be seen whether or not the Rhinos can match them.
