Salford Red Devils stadium future confirmed

The Salford Red Devils finally have clarity on the ownership of their stadium.

The Salford Community Stadium was built ahead of the 2012 season to become the club’s new home, replacing the Willows: the club’s home for a century.

Rugby union club Sale Sharks moved into the rugby league ground later in 2012.

The stadium was developed by Salford City Council’s joint-venture company with Peel Group – a property investment business.

Therefore, both the Council and Peel have to make decisions surrounding the stadium’s operation, including who plays there.

In 2022, Salford City Football Club and Sale Sharks had a joint bid to buy the stadium rejected, and the Council announced their intent to acquire the 50% stake owned by Peel Group – which would mean they own it outright.

The Red Devils, however, were only granted permission to play the current season at the stadium in December 2023 after months of uncertainty.

Today, the club announced in a statement: “Salford City Council have today taken the decision to fully acquire the Salford Community Stadium.

“Managing Director, Paul King has said; “It’s great news that the Council have now taken the decision to fully acquire the Stadium.

“It’s been a long road to get to this point, and the decision is another step towards a sustainable and bright future for Salford Red Devils.

“We look forward to sitting down with the Council and Sale Sharks and agreeing a tenancy deal that works for us all and secures the long-term future of rugby league in our City.

“Our attentions now turn to this Saturday where we welcome Catalans to Salford for our final home game of the 2024 regular season. It would be simply fantastic to see those who have supported us so loyally through this period with smiles on their faces, celebrating today’s news together”.
