Reports: Salford Red Devils star failing to turn up for training

The Salford Red Devils suffered a difficult off season following the 2023 season. Financial difficulties meant the club lost a number of key players, and faced a difficult job to rebuild the squad ahead of the 2024 season. However, they are flying high in the Super League table in sixth place.

Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft left the club in a lucrative double transfer to Leeds Rhinos. Joe Burgess left under a cloud of internal disciplinary issues, and has gone on to be an important part of Hull KR’s success this year. Forward, Oliver Partington, was consistently linked with a move away, however, remained with the club, much to the relief of the Salford faithful.

Astute recruitment has helped the Red Devils remain competitive in the top half Super League. Nene Macdonald, in particular, has been a key signing and has formed a deadly centre partnership with Tim Lafai.

Now, it appears that one of Salford’s summer recruits may have lost the faith of the clubs management team. He could be set to leave the club.

Nofoaluma only joined Salford at the beginning of the 2024 season. Red Devils fans were hopeful that he would be able to recapture the form he showed in the early part of his NRL career. However, he has only featured twice for the club this season, and now, it appears he may be on the verge of leaving the club.

According to reports in Australia, Nofoaluma has failed to settle at Salford. Wide World of Sports reports that he is in disagreement with the manager, having missed several training sessions.

“The veteran winger never settled in at the club and my English spies tell me he’s missed several training sessions, which has put him at odds with management.

“Nofoaluma’s attitude has been questioned in the past, but he’s a proven performer who brought up 100 tries for the [Wests] Tigers last season.

“With injuries cutting a swathe through plenty of NRL clubs, they could do worse than look at the former Tiger.”

Nofoaluma has struggled with disciplinary issues in the past. When he left the Wests Tigers at the end of the 2023 season, the club cited his “failure to adhere to club protocols” as part of their decision to release him.

Nofoaluma was first sanctioned for arriving late to an official pre-season training session. He then missed a subsequent training session due to illness. However, the club were unable to contact him for 48 hours after his absence was reported.

The report also suggested that Nofouluma had a strained relationship with Tigers head coach, Benji Marshall, which contributed to the Tigers releasing him from the final two years of his contract.

At his best, Nofoaluma is an incredibly talented player, having made 199 appearances in the NRL, scoring 104 tries in the process since making his debut in 2013. He spent 10 years with the Tigers, which included a short term loan move to the Melbourne Storm in 2022, where he scored four tries in six games.

If Nofoaluma does depart, Salford will be losing a player of huge potential. However, it appears his disciplinary issues may prevent him from realising his full potential in Greater Manchester.
