Salford Red Devils have secured the signing of St Helens youngster Jonny Vaughan on loan for the remainder of the season.
Vaughan joins up with his new Salford teammates immediately and looks set to make a debut on Sunday when the Red Devils take on Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium.
Vaughan is a product of St Helens’ academy, with the 20-year-old working his way through the ranks to eventually make his debut last season. He made eight appearances for the Saints in 2024, with his versatility, given he can play at centre or back-row, coming in handy for Paul Wellens during the club’s injury crisis.
Unfortunately, though, he has found chances hard to come by this season, failing to make an appearance for the Red V so far this season. As such, he’ll be keen to get some minutes under his belt at Salford, who remain under a sustainability cap and find themselves desperately short of options.
Paul Rowley has only been able to name a 17-man squad to take on the Warriors on Sunday and while Vaughan is a part of it, the Reds head into the game without a raft of high profile players.
In fact, just three of their top 13 squad numbers have been named, with Ryan Brierley, Kallum Watkins and Joe Shorrocks set to be involved. There’s no Nene Macdonald due to their cap restrictions, while the likes of Deon Cross, Ethan Ryan, Jayden Nikorima and Chris Hill have dropped out of the reckoning.
Vaughan is in the final year of his contract at St Helens and in February, All out Rugby League reported that he had agreed a deal to join Wigan in 2026, alongside Dayon Sambou. As such, he’ll be keen to impress this weekend and catch the eye of Matt Peet ahead of linking up with the Cherry and Whites next year.
