Salford Red Devils sign Super League winger on month-long loan

Salford Red Devils have confirmed the signing of another Super League man on a month-long loan deal as the club continues to try and flesh out their squad.

The restricted salary cap has seen them forced to bid players farewell with four leaving so far in Brad Singleton (Castleford Tigers), Marc Sneyd (Warrington Wolves), Tim Lafai (returned home to Australia) and Kallum Watkins (Leeds Rhinos).

Star man Nene Macdonald remains ‘over the cap’ with the club unable to register him and that’s seen him head out on loan to Oldham, although it has been confirmed he will also return to Australia but on a temporary basis for the birth of his child.

Factor in the injury issues the Red Devils have had and it means they’ve been fielding a bare-bones squad with Salford unable to name a full matchday 17 at times in 2025.

As such, they’ve turned to the loan market with the likes of George Hill, Jonny Vaughan and Tiaki Chan all joining the club, and now another man has.

That man is Warrington Wolves winger Jake Thewlis with the young outside back penning a month-long loan deal with Paul Rowley’s side, offering them some much-needed relief in the position.

Recent weeks have seen academy player Joshua Wagstaffe and Nathan Connell play in the position, although the latter has picked up an injury and missed out last week.

There are also doubts over the future of Deon Cross with St Helens reportedly interested in signing the outside back. Cross didn’t play last week despite being named in the 21-man squad.

So by adding Thewlis, Salford address a number of problems whilst the deal also allows Warrington to get their winger some much-needed game time.

The 19-year-old has played two Super League games to date, scoring in the most recent which came in Round Six against Leeds Rhinos. Prior to that, he had been on loan with London Broncos but he now earns a Super League opportunity.

Per Salford’s announcement, Thewlis is in line to face Catalans this weekend in Rivals Round.
