After today’s RFL Special Measures meeting, Salford Red Devils have released a statement of their own apologising to the club’s fans.
An RFL meeting, called last Friday, was held earlier today and confirmed that Salford will be placed back under a restricted salary cap of £1.2 million whilst the club will be called into a meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the non-payment of players and staff.
It’s a massive blow for the Red Devils who announced their takeover early in February but now find themselves still struggling in March.
The £1.2 million cap restriction was in place previously with Salford taking on Midlands Hurricanes in the Challenge Cup under those limitations. That saw them name a squad that didn’t feature the likes of Marc Sneyd, Kallum Watkins and Tim Lafai.
It has been confirmed that the club’s £1.2 million cap is based on that first £1.2 million spent meaning that trio and numerous other stars will not be able to play until this situation is rectified.
Sharing a statement of their own as the RFL confirmed the news, Salford Red Devils took to social media to address the news and apologise to fans.
The statement read: “Salford Red Devils can confirm that the Club will be under the restriction of a sustainability cap for this weekend’s Betfred Super League fixture against Castleford Tigers on Friday 7th March.
“This is due to the delay of funding following the takeover with funds currently pending regulatory clearance. CEO Chris Irwin and the new ownership will meet with the Special Measures Committee and RL Commercial tomorrow morning.
“To our fans, we sincerely apologise, we know this is not an easy time to be a Salford Reds fan.
“We apologise to you on behalf of our new ownership who have assured the Club that the consortium is working to rectify the financial situation and there will be no further issues.
“Thank you for your patience and support.”

Absolutely unacceptable from both Salford and the RFL,the teams that have played them so far have been gifted points, zcatleford will also benefit th8s weekend, then what happens if they get their act together, Hull fc don’t play them til June , a very reasonable chance they will be sorted and back to full strength, where is the fairness in this debacle , immediate suspension from playing until they meet the standards required, At least Hull where terrible against everyone last year so everyone benefited.
