Salford Red Devils recruit provides injury update as he makes ‘top six’ comment

Salford Red Devils' Sam Davis

Sam Davis is edging towards a return to full fitness as he prepares himself for his first season in Salford Red Devils colours. Davis penned a two-year deal with Salford in October, with the hooker moving up to Greater Manchester after spending much of his career to date with London Broncos.

The Broncos’ relegation from the top flight was followed by a mass exodus with Davis being one of several to stay in Super League. However, the number nine missed the final week of London’s season with a calf injury and while he has linked up with his new teammates, he hasn’t quite started full training under Paul Rowley.

It won’t be long until he can get up and running with his new side, though, and as the new Super League season approaches, his fitness will come as a big boost.

“I’m not too far off now, I’m up and running again so it should be a couple of weeks and then I’ll be in full training hopefully,” the 25-year-old told the Salford Red Devils Youtube channel.

Davis looks set to share the hooker position with Joe Mellor this season, with the 34-year-old taking on the position in the latter stages of his career and the new recruit believes that his style can complement Mellor’s nicely.

“Joe has been around for a while now and is very experienced so it’s good to pick up bits like that,” he added.

“I think the way that me and Joe both play nine is a very different style and it’s a lovely contrast so hopefully we can work off each other this season.”

He added: “To be able to stay in Super League was a massive opportunity for me and something that I worked hard on last year in order to get the opportunity to do that. Obviously, to be part of Salford who are a top six team is massive to me.”
