Salford Red Devils quota situation for 2025 with potential for major signings

Salford Red Devils might have quota space to use for signings ahead of 2025.

Ahead of the current season, three quota signings were made by the Red Devils, with Nene Macdonald from Leeds Rhinos, Cade Cust from Wigan Warriors and David Nofoaluma from Wests Tigers all joining the club in the off-season.

However Ken Sio had to leave the club on compassionate grounds before the season started, while Nofoaluma left after making just two appearances for the club.

After that, their quota spots were filled again as Jayden Nikorima was signed after being released from Catalans Dragons.

Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those that didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.

These rules are much more relaxed than previous rules, which were at one point to only allow three foreign players in most English sides.

Cade Cust‘s contract is up at the end of the year. With the club having a one-year extension option, he could stay on, but has been linked heavily with a move elsewhere – particularly with Hull FC.

Similarly, Loghan Lewis won’t remain contracted past this year unless he has his own option triggered.

Tim Lafai has one more year on his contract after joining for the 2022 season, and his contract is up at the same time as Jayden Nikorima‘s.

Longer contracts are in the hands of Australian second-row duo Sam Stone and Shane Wright, who are contracted through 2026.

The longest contract of the current quota players, however, is Nene Macdonald‘s, as he has another three years left on his four-year deal signed in October last year.
