Salford Red Devils have confirmed that local music legends, the Happy Mondays, will perform at their game against Leeds Rhinos.
In their home opener for the 2025 Super League season, the Red Devils will see Salford royalty perform before kick-off and at half time.
The Happy Mondays never earned that elusive number one in the charts but they cracked the top five on two occasions with ‘Step On’ and ‘Kinky Afro’ with the first reaching platinum status, highlighting their immense popularity and success.
Salford host Leeds Rhinos on Saturday with both teams looking to improve following defeat in the opening round, something that was particularly damaging for the Red Devils.
Whilst Leeds were edged out by Wakefield in a 14-12 loss, Salford Red Devils set a Super League record for the largest margin of victory as they fell 82-0 to St Helens.
Paul Rowley named a squad that almost entirely comprised of reserve and academy players with the head coach claiming it was “impossible” to name more first-team players due to injury.
That decision will be looked at by the RFL who have announced that they will investigate the club and whether they have brought the sport into disrepute.
Whilst that is going on, Salford will still be trying to get their £1.2 million salary cap lifted in order to be able to play their full-strength team.
Those who do turn out to support them on Saturday will be boosted by the Happy Mondays, who the Red Devils confirmed would perform.
A club statement explained: “Salford Red Devils are delighted to announce that local music legends, the Happy Mondays, will be performing at the Salford Community Stadium this coming Saturday.
“To celebrate the first home Betfred Super League fixture of the season against Leeds Rhinos, the Happy Mondays will be performing some of their hit songs from the past four and a half decades before kick-off and at half-time.
“The iconic band, including stars of the Madchester scene Shaun Ryder and Mark “Bez” Berry, started their journey here in Salford back in 1980 before going on to sell out venues around the world and reach platinum status.
“The band’s seminal 1990 hits “Step On” and “Kinky Afro” both reached no.5 in the UK charts, with the former reaching platinum status. You can be there this Saturday to see the band perform some of their greatest hits back in their home city for the Salford Red Devils faithful.”
