Salford Red Devils Head Coach, Paul Rowley has named a 38-man squad for the club’s one and only friendly of 2024 against St Helens and has included a former Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants trialist.
After a week of warm-weather training in Portugal, the Red Devils will step-up preparations against the reigning World Champions, St Helens.
Saints took the spoils in our last meeting at the Totally Wicked Stadium, but it was early tries from Brodie Croft and Ryan Brierley that initially raced us into a 12-point lead.
This fixture will be more focussed on dusting the off-season cobwebs and getting ready for our Round 1 clash against Leeds Rhinos in a fortnight’s time.
As expected, Rowley has named a squad mixed with first-grade and reserve team players, to maximise valuable game minutes ahead of the season opener.
Included within the 38-man list are new signings Nene Macdonald, Joe Shorrocks, Matty Foster, Kai Morgan, Chris Hankinson and Joe Mellor.

Salford have named Thomas Huw Worthington who is the same player who was handed a trial by the Leeds Rhinos last year having previously trialled with Huddersfield Giants and scored against the Rhinos in a reserve game. This has been confirmed by Leeds Live.
Plenty of even the most die hard Rhinos fans would have been unaware of Worthington’s deal with Leeds, with seemingly the first notice of it coming when Wides Vikings announced they had made a loan move for him.
The club tweeted: “The Vikings are pleased to announce the loan signing of Huw Worthington, Prop Forward, from Leeds Rhinos on loan until the end of the season.
“Worthington, 28, has just signed for the Rhinos. He is 6’1′ and 111kg and will add more size to the Vikings! Welcome Huw!”
As the time he split time between the Vikings and then the Rhinos reserves. Worthington formerly played for Bedford Blues as a lock forward having been born in Wales, before moving to Richmond FC. He has appeared 21 times for Richmond per their club website.
