Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley has expressed some doubt about his own future at the club beyond the end of the season.
It was announced at the end of last season that this season will be Rowley’s last as a head coach at the Salford Community Stadium before moving into a director of rugby role in 2026. Kurt Haggerty, who currently works under Rowley as an assistant, is the man due to take the reins at the end of season.
Since that change was announced, though, the club has been taken over and continues to find itself in a very uncertain situation financially. Wages have been paid late on a consistent basis, and as a result of that uncertainty, a raft of players have left Salford in recent months.
Chris Hill and Chris Hankinson are the most recent two to leave, with the pair moving on to join Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos respectively. They were among a number of players to refuse to play last week against Hull KR and the expectation is that more players will leave in the coming days as the turbulence continues.
And, Rowley admits that he has given his future some own thought, suggesting the move to director of rugby is in some doubt.
Salford Red Devils boss on his future
“It most definitely needs to, doesn’t it,” Rowley told Serious About RL when asked if he had given his future a re-think. “Because it just shows you how vulnerable you can be in the workplace, so to speak.
“I take every day as it comes and don’t think too far ahead. I deal with the immediate for now.”
Pushed further on whether he would be the club’s director of rugby next season, Rowley said: “I’m just dealing with every day as it comes, I’ve got no plans as it stands.”

Some of these loan players should not be put in the position of replacing ALL of the experienced players as they are risking serious injuries and if it gets to that state I have no doubt that Paul Rowley will declare that a squad cannot be made available.
