Salford Red Devils boss’ glowing Paul King verdict amidst confusion

Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley

Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley has spoken glowingly on former club CEO Paul King and responded to confusion over his role at the club following the recent takeover.

The Red Devils confirmed recently that they were to be taken over by a consortium led by Swiss banker Dario Berta and that the takeover would see former Commercial Officer Chris Irwin assume the role of Chief Executive Officer.

No official statement was made on Paul King, the man who had held the role of CEO, and head coach Paul Rowley moved to clear up some confusion after being asked about King’s ‘departure’ during his weekly press conference.

It was put to Rowley that King had “departed” and would be having ‘time off’, something that the Salford Red Devils boss had no knowledge of as he showed his backing for King.

“I’ve not been told that Paul has left the club,” Rowley responded before quipping:  “If he’s gone to give his head a rest then who could blame him?”

It’s still unclear what role King would have at the club given that Irwin has been appointed as CEO, however, Rowley put his full backing and support behind the former CEO and praised him for guiding the club in recent years.

He said: “It’s been stressful for all at the club and Paul more than most. It’s a family club here as we know and I think that Paul does the job of five people.

“My thoughts on Paul are that myself and him have a really good relationship. We’ve worked really well together and have some really respectful and almost fun disagreements which are really healthy.

“Paul’s been good to me and loyal to me and likewise, I’ve been loyal to him.”

King became the club’s CEO at the end of the 2024 season, taking on the role in October but he had served as Managing Director before that and Rowley reminded fans and the media of the success the club have had during that time.

Rowley argued: “What I will say is that he’s been in charge of Salford for an era that has been one of the most successful and pleasant eras in Salford’s history so history tells us that he’s a man who has been in charge of a club batting at the top end of Super League and challenging for trophies.

“He’s had a remarkable tenure as leader of this club. I know his father and himself are very very proud and passionate supporters so he can hold his head up high.

“Whether he stays or leaves, I’m not privy to that. As far as I’m concerned, he’s still part of this club and he’s got my handshake any time I see him.”
