MPs back Salford fans in preventing name change

Two prospective Parliamentary candidates have backed Salford fans in their fight to prevent the club changing its name to Manchester.

Club owner Marwan Koukash has been left disappointed by poor attendances so far in 2017 despite the Red Devils improved performances on the field.

This has prompted Koukash to suggest he could potentially change the name of the club to Manchester in a bid to improve crowds, but this has received a angry reaction from a number of supporters.

A group of fans have set up a ‘Salford Forever, Manchester Never’ group and this has the support of Rebecca Long-Bailey who is defending the Salford and Eccles seat in the general election.

She told PA: “This isn’t just about making sure that Salford remains the name of Salford Red Devils, it’s a matter of civic pride. To not have the name Salford is a smear on this city.”

Salford Rugby League club has held its place name for 144 years, winning one Challenge Cup and six league championships, their last in 1975-76.
