Salford launch legal action against Toronto over O’Brien transfer

Salford have claimed they are still owed £20,000 from the transfer of Gareth O’Brien and are taking legal action against the Toronto Wolfpack, League Weekly have reported.

O’Brien, who saved Salford from relegation in 2016, joined the Wolfpack in March 2018 but the Red Devils say the transfer fee has not been paid in full.

Toronto are funded by mining billionaire David Argyle but were also caught up in controversy in December when their players weren’t paid on time.

That issue was resolved at the start of the year after an injection of money from new sponsors, but this latest saga is likely to raise question marks about the club’s values again.

Salford are believed to have requested the money and have now launched legal action against the Canadian outfit in a bid to recoup the full transfer fee for the 27-year-old full-back.
