Saints make contact with RFL over Challenge Cup final officiating

St Helens have asked the Rugby Football League for answers over how the Challenge Cup final was officiated.

The club have questioned why Morgan Knowles’ third minute ‘try’ was not sent to the video referee to be reviewed.

They are also believed to be unhappy with the policing of offsides and the ruck area during Saturday’s game at Wembley.

Robert Hicks took charge of the final and has since come under scrutiny, with Saints’ boss Justin Holbrook particularly bemused by the decision not to send the potential touchdown from Knowles upstairs.

“It was a massive call,” he told the media. “We are talking about a big game, get your nose in front in a Challenge Cup final and it is a different game.”

Underdogs Warrington went on to claim an 18-4 victory but it seems the fallout from the game may rumble on, although the club have refused to share the details of their complaint.

A club spokesman told the St Helens Star: “We want to keep any correspondence with the RFL private and confidential and want to congratulate Warrington on a great win.”
