Rumour Mill #7

Columnist JACK CONLON brings you the biggest rumours and gossip from the world of rugby league over the past week.

Leeds set to announce new signing

Leeds Rhinos are set to announce the signing of Cronulla Sharks prop Ava Seumanufagai (above). With the Sharks needing to shift a player for cap space, the Kiwi forward has been rumoured with the club for the past week and was set to make a decision on his future over the weekend.

It is now believed he has chosen to make the move to England and become Dave Furner’s fifth signing. With the Rhinos struggling for results at the moment, the club are hoping Seumanufagai will have a big impact and boost their form.

Three more to leave Widnes

Gelling charged

At the time of writing, the Vikings are still looking to trim their wage bill, and could be set to be release three more players this week. Anthony Gelling, Harrison Hansen and Hep Cahill are among the club’s highest earners and are rumoured to be the next to leave the Select Security Stadium.

They would follow Wellington Albert, Krisnan Inu, Adam Tangata and Liam Hood out of the door, leaving the Vikings with a squad of just 22. On the positive side, Widnes are set to announce more loan signings in the next few weeks. As predicted in last week’s Rumour Mill column, Luis Johnson arrived from Warrington and shouldn’t be the last to come in on a short-term deal.

UPDATE: Since the release of this article, Widnes Vikings have confirmed that there are no more planned departures from the club in the near future. Both Dom Speakman and Luis Johnson are set to be free to play from this weekend onwards and leave then club to play the rest of 2019 with a 25-man squad.

Broncos in for Sandow

Controversial halfback Chris Sandow could be set to return to Super League. The former Warrington Wolves scrum-half released a cryptic post on his Instagram page on Thursday that suggested a move back to the UK is on the cards.

Since leaving the Wolves at the end of 2016, Sandow has had spells with Norths Devils and Moranbah Miners but is said to be keen on reigniting his professional career. The Super League club most strongly rumoured to be interested are London Broncos. In a move similar to that of Jamie Soward’s signing in 2013, Danny Ward is reportedly aiming to add some flair to his side’s attack and sees Sandow as the man who could do just that.

Leigh set to add more

Leigh Centurions are to add more players to their squad, according to League Express. The Centurions re-signed hooker Liam Hood from Widnes last week but are reportedly in the market for more players.

One named strongly linked with a move is Toronto prop Jacob Emmitt, however the Wolfpack’s current injury situation may hinder any potential deal. There have also been whispers that the Centurions are in discussions with one of the three players who were last week released by Widnes.
