Rugby League World Cup coach steps down from club role leaving big role for Leeds Rhinos legend

Sheffield Eagles’ Assistant Coach Ged Corcoran has left the club by mutual consent. 

Corcoran has been a long-standing servant to Mark Aston, alongside Keith Senior, and he leaves the Eagles with our very best wishes. 

Before taking a coaching role, he was a fiery prop forward who played for the Eagles from 2007 to 2010. 

On Corcoran’s departure, Director of Rugby Mark Aston said: “We have a lot to thank Ged for at the Eagles,” 

“He has been a key part of the coaching staff for a number of years and he is in a perfect position to take on a head coaching role elsewhere, when the time is right.

“His efforts as a player will always be recognised too. 

“Wherever he goes next, there’s no doubt he’ll be a success.” 

The decision comes shortly after Corcoran led Ireland in the Rugby League World Cup where, due to defeat against Lebanon in their second group game, the Irish failed to make the quarter-finals despite a star studded squad.

Perhaps his side’s tournament has opened up a new opportunity for the coach or indeed left him needing a break.

Either way it leaves big responsibilities on the shoulders of former Leeds Rhinos legend Keith Senior as he looks to support Aston in their exciting preparations for 2023 having made some major signings including the capture of former Huddersfield Giants forward Oliver Roberts today.
