York Knights boss talks Paul McShane contract as he and Paul Vaughan lauded for latest performance

York Knights head coach has confirmed that veteran hooker Paul McShane does have an option to play on in 2027, with Mark Applegarth shedding light on the futures of McShane and fellow standout Paul Vaughan.

The Knights confirmed in November that McShane had signed a new deal but no terms were revealed regarding how long the 36-year-old had been tied down for.

Speaking in his post-match presser after York’s 40-16 loss to St Helens, a score that doesn’t do justice to how well the Knights played, Applegarth was asked about his general who he hailed as an ‘unbelievable player’, before also paying credit to fellow veteran Paul Vaughan.

On McShane, Applegarth said: “He got a bit of a neck spasm at half-time and a lot of players probably wouldn’t have wanted to put their hand up to come back on.

“He’s got as much fight in him as I’ve ever seen and he’s a real quality player for us, just as Paul Vaughan is too.”

On the duo, who have a combined age of 71, Applegarth said: “It would have been quite easy for them two to take other options and shall we say finish their career on a different route but they’ve both chose to come and help us on our journey, and help some of the less experienced guys in our squad understand what being a professional at this level is all about, and also what playing at this level is all about.

“I’ve got nothing but admiration and respect for both of them as well as others such as David Nofoaluma, who has also been right at the very top.”

Key York Knights paired contracted for 2027

When Vaughan signed for the Knights it was confirmed that he had penned a two-year deal but there was uncertainty around McShane’s future, however, that has now been cleared up by Applegarth as he was asked about the pair’s long-term plans.

“I think they’re both contracted for next year anyway and I think they’ve both earned the right that it will be on their terms when they finish,” the head coach revealed.

“I’ve got excellent relationships with both and I think that (playing on in 2027) is just a case of getting good fortune with any serious injury and making sure that they themselves and their families are in good head spaces where they want to commit.

“It’s then on the club and the player coming up with the decision to do so but there will be no pressure on us to make them commit too early.

“It will be fully on their terms because when they’re showing them performances and applying themselves out there, I think they’ve earned that right.”
