Round Four of the Women’s Super League proved to be full of action, as history was made when Leeds Rhinos recorded the league’s highest ever winning margin after victory over Warrington Wolves.
The round started on Saturday afternoon, with Challenge Cup runners-up St Helens looking to bounce back from their poor showing at Wembley. They faced Barrow Raiders away from home, who came into the match with a win over Warrington Wolves in round three.
Amanda Wilkinson’s Raiders performed exceptionally well in the opening 40, as they headed into the break only 8-6 down. However, a 32-point haul in the second half from the former champions saw their hopes of a potential upset fade away.
Nicole Stewart added Barrow’s only try, whilst doubles for Phoebe Hook and Rachel Woosey helped the Saints to their third win of the season.
At the same time, reigning Champions York Valkyrie travelled over the Penines to face newcomers Leigh Leopards, in another game that could have potentially seen a shock victory.
Going into the half-time break only 8-0 down, the Leopards would have thought they had a chance to get something from the game. However, Lindsay Anfield’s side proved too strong for the league’s newbies as they ran out 26-0 winners.
Leigh remain in the playoff spots, though, as they sit third following wins over Barrow and Warrington already this year.
On Sunday, newly crowned Challenge Cup champions Wigan Warriors backed up their performance in the capital with a dominant 58-0 away win over Huddersfield Giants.
There were try doubles for Eva Hunter, Tiana Power and Megan Williams, whilst Mary Coleman, Anna Davies, Kaitlin Hilton and Wembley’s Player of the Match Grace Banks also crossed.
The round culminated in spectacular fashion, as Leeds Rhinos women produced an incredible 110-0 display, which included 20 tries, over Warrington Wolves to record the highest winning margin in the league’s history.
Young fullback Ebony Stead returned to the Rhinos side, scoring four tries, whilst Evie Cousins and Sophie Nuttall both grabbed hat-tricks.
A further three players scored braces, and in the first half, star halfback Mel Howard went nine from nine from the boot.
The victory broke the record of most points scored in a match, held by Wigan (scoring 106 points against Barrow earlier this year) and the highest ever winning margin, also held by the Warriors (beating Huddersfield 102-0 in 2024).
