Hull KR have completed a famous treble and become the fifth team to win a Super League Grand Final and coach Willie Peters has had his say.
The Robins won 24-6 with Joe Burgess scoring two tries whilst Jez Litten and Mikey Lewis bagged one a piece, with Lewis claiming the Rob Burrow award as Man of the Match.
It was an incredible performance with the Robins soaking up pressure for the first 15 minutes before then playing 65 minutes of almost perfect rugby and for Willie Peters, it was all for East Hull.
Speaking on Sky Sports, his immediate reaction reflected that as he said: “The people of Hull KR have waited a long time and this is for them. We’ve always said we’re a community based club and the fans are the most important thing to us.
“Our fans are all tough, they work for everything and fight for everything and that’s what this plays into. I’m so, so, so proud of them.”
Hull KR coach pays tribute to ‘legends’ as players hailed
Having encouraged Mikey Lewis to embrace a mentality similar to that of Reece Walsh in the NRL Grand Final, Willie Peters had his own say on Lewis after his Man of the Match performance.
The Hull KR boss said: “Mikey knew this before the game that he had to take those big moments and go after the game a little bit more and tonight was the perfect opportunity for him.
“I don’t want to get too far ahead but tonight was the making of Mikey Lewis, there’s no doubt about that. We know he’s a very good player but he wants to chase greatness and to chase greatness, you need to do this every year. That’s the start of the journey in terms of where we get to.”
As for where his players now stand in history, he explained: “They’re all legends to me. I think there’s four teams before us that ever won a competition and four teams that ever won the treble so we’re the fifth. Wigan and Saints have never won two trebles so that’s how hard it is to do and those teams are champion teams.
“They’ll always be remembered as champion teams and I think this team has now got to be in that category.”
