Willie Peters shares Mikey Lewis injury update as Hull KR boss makes ‘hunger’ admission

Disappointed Hull KR boss Willie Peters gave an injury update on two key players following today’s 40-10 Challenge Cup final loss to Wigan Warriors.

Second-rower Dean Hadley lasted less than four minutes before failing a head injury assessment. That will rule him out of next Saturday’s Super League game at Wakefield Trinity.

In addition, star stand-off Mikey Lewis got through the full game, but was clearly hampered by ankle damage suffered midway through the first half.

In his post-match press conference, Peters said: “Dean’s okay. He’s obviously disappointed, he wanted to go back on.”

The coach conceded: “It hurt us in terms of rotation because Dean was going to play the full game.

“Sam Luckley hasn’t played the minutes he’s played today – there were guys there playing bigger minutes than what they would do normally.”

Of Lewis, Peters added: “He was saying he was okay to play on that’s why we left him out there. We’ll see how it settles down.”

Wigan Warriors fuelled by Grand Final loss, admits Hull KR coach

The Hull KR boss admitted his team were second-best as the trophy they won a year ago was ripped away.

He said: “Wigan were outstanding today so I don’t want to take that away from them, but there were periods in that game that just wasn’t us.

“The hungrier side certainly won. We had some opportunities in that first half, but we didn’t want it enough, then when Wigan defended their try-line we felt sorry for ourselves and gave penalties away and didn’t handle that. But as much as we weren’t at our best, Wigan were very good.”

Wigan’s win avenged the result of last year’s Super League Grand Final. Peters said: “They’ve had a whole pre-season thinking about us and hating on us and making sure they got it right against us on the big occasions. That was evident to see.

“I’d like to think we can replicate that and finish on our terms at the back end of the year and be as hungry as they were, because they were very hungry today.”

Mickey Lewis pulled a Gavin Miller, and the result says it all. First decent NRL offer, sell him. But I suspect there won’t be such an offer. Bring back Brad Schneider as a replacement, he was a capable understudy to Nathan Cleary.
